Historical foundations of virtual communities

Virtual communities have evolved since their origins in the 1970s, when bulletin boards and email systems began to be used. Over time, these communities have adapted and grown, incorporating new technologies and platforms such as Usenet, Bulletin Board Systems (BBS), and later, the World Wide Web (WWW). The first virtual community, Newsgroups, was created in 1979 by Tom Truscott and Jim Ellis, students at Duke University. These communities have been fundamental in the formation of the cyberspace network and have influenced the way we connect and communicate online.
